Jeff Greene’s Liner Notes:
Steve Lacy’s music is power and beauty. It’s fearless and vulnerable. His commitment to craft on his instrument and in composition rival only his greatest inspiration, master musician Thelonious Monk. I first heard Steve Lacy as a student, then trying to learn about my own musical abilities and to study the masters. It was his live album, The Rent, which captured my attention. There is a palpable urgency present in this recording that is far bigger than three individuals, only a trio of soprano saxophone, double bass, and drums, that inspires me after nearly fifteen years.
This recording is a challenge to myself and to this ensemble; to manipulate five of Lacy’s compositions and filter them through our common language, and to compose five original pieces born out of characteristic elements I uncovered while learning Lacy’s music. My hope is that our music inspires you to make your own discoveries, and that it resonates within you for even a single day, let alone years.
Dedicated to Steve Lacy (1934-2004)
