about

SUN SPEAK is Matt Gold (guitar) and Nate Friedman (drums). SUN SPEAK performs original works of electric chamber music and is based in Chicago, IL.

Sacred Rubble (ears&eyes Records) is Chicago-based duo SUN SPEAK’s second release. Whereas their debut Light Blue Light documented the band’s early explorations, Sacred Rubble distills the precise and intuitive language cultivated between guitarist Matt Gold and drummer Nate Friedman. Over the course of two single-minded weeks in the woods of New Hampshire, the band built these compositions out of extended improvisations, exploring emotional zones and developing seeds for the music to come. Slowly, through careful refinement, broad sketches gave way to concise, clear pieces.

Upon their return to Chicago, SUN SPEAK headed into the studio as the first snow of winter trickled in. Working closely with old friend and recording engineer Charles Glanders, the band developed a vision for the record’s sound. All tracking, mixing, and mastering took place in Chicago, mirroring the city’s influence on the duo’s developing aesthetic.

The music on Sacred Rubble adopts a raw and dynamic approach; there are spiraling, chaotic moments alongside understated ones, all serving the band’s ongoing pursuit of vivid musical worlds. These worlds can be traced through the record - the rhythmic cycles of “Fog,” the droning crescendo in “Egg,” the unison gestures of “Unalaska.” Sacred Rubble finds the duo growing into a sound that is open yet intimate.
