about

Dev Brown was living on a jungle parcel in Kauai when he surprised himself by writing scraps of folk and pop melodies. This was something that, unlike dwelling in a curious place, Brown had never done before; his background was in IDM and electronic music.

Initially, he ascribed these melodies to the influence of the gods of the jungle, but it soon became apparent that he had tapped into something even more spiritual: the beginnings of an EP. “I remember thinking, ‘These songs deserve to be heard and I will regret this forever if I don't go back to Chicago right now and make an album,’” he says.

And so he did just that. With Katinka Kleijn (cello) and Quin Kirchner (drums) on board, Brown’s scraps of folky jungle-tinged pop turned into 888 seconds of “live rock music” approached from an electronic perspective. The lyrics touch frequently on nature, a rare subject in the world of rock, but mostly they swirl around ideas of lover as god or god as
lover or narrator as god—and so on. In “Do you believe,” the singer cries out to either a lover or a god-figure, but both interpretations work (which says a lot about both love and god, if you think about it). In “Laredo (it’s around you),” we get lines like “your body is a sacred oath/I swear it to myself at night.” It’s a line composed in nature, recorded in the city, and reverberating with reverence for both the spiritual and the human.

lyrics

i see it where the water flows
i feel it when our hearts collide
i'm never gunna figure it out
closing my eyes

so be it if i lose control
it's just a game we like to play
quite acting like you're so concerned
it's all a dream
and i feel relieved

it's around me
all around you
it surrounds me
all around you

i'm trying to find the light in the dark
knowing that the sparks will fly
fire's gunna burn it down
and set me alight
the spirits arise

your body is a sacred oath
i swear it to myself at night
i'm never gunna cut you off
or soften your light
and i'll testify

it's around me
all around you
it surrounds me
all around you

i see it where the water flows
i feel it when our hearts collide
i'm never gunna figure it out
closing my eyes
the spirits arise

it's around you
(round me)
it's around me
all around you
it's around you...
