about

Whirlpool is :

Caroline Davis - alto saxophone, voice
Jeff Swanson - guitar
Charles Rumback - drums
...and here with special guest Ron Miles on cornet

Whirlpool: Chicago and New York-based trio, featuring alto saxophone, guitar, and drums, that combines forces with the celebrated Denver-based cornetist Ron Miles on their second release with ears&eyes Records. It features 8 tracks with compositions by all three members of the band.

Whirlpool is a collaborative band that eliminates the boundaries between composition and improvisation in a bass-less setting. These musicians contribute their individual texture and unravel a fabric of sound that’s both captivating and fresh.

The three organically evolved into Whirlpool in 2012 after dipping and dabbling in one another’s performances around town, and after an attractive impromptu performance at an intimate tribute-concert to the late Paul Motian, where Davis invited her comrades to embark on a Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell inspired adventure. They have since toured and taught master classes across the US, following their well received debut record, This World and One More.

While on tour in 2013, a stop at the prominent Dazzle in Denver led to an invitation for cornetist Ron Miles to sit-in on a couple tunes. Rumback remembers, “We brought him up on the second song, and he ended up playing the rest of the set with us and it was incredible! He hadn’t even seen the music before.”

Not only did Miles’s unscripted live collaboration bring the set to an incredible high, but he did that thing that he’s notorious for – playing music from the inside out like a rhythm section player, and pushed things forward in a beautiful way that was so invigorating. This instant connection inspired the idea to record their next record with Miles.

Davis notes, “Denver has always felt like a second home to our band; our music, spirit, and personality fits in with the culture. Ron’s sensitivity was a shoo-in for this band.”

Seizing the opportunity to play with fire and shake things up, the Whirlpool masters working in a “jazz” setting without what’s often referred to as the “anchor”: the bass laying down solid rhythm, harmony and a blanket from which musicians often catapult their improvisations.

Dancing On The Inside captures the creativity and insightfulness in a rare (and special) moment where long time friends and bandmates connected with a like-minded musician miles away.
