about

What comes to mind is the new exploration of a mix of an electric/electronic-feel mixed into what’s normally considered an acoustic genre; jazz and more specifically freely improvised jazz. And though there’s minimal use of electronics aside from a couple of minutes with drummer Marcus Evans’ use of the MPC in the opening track “Lament for Sweetness” named after Chicago Bears’ rusher Walter Payton, the tinge is there and is quite inviting.

Greg Ward and bass clarinetist Jason Stein battle it out to see what point can be made quickest and then let go into the ether and what’s even more impressive is that drummer Chad Taylor recorded his part post-production two years later and you’d never be able to tell; the connection and interplay are tight, fitting in perfectly with electric bassist Matt Lux’ classic clean tone. Producer Steven Buono brought this group of far-reaching and ever-busy musicians into, usually short and sweet, aural explosions.

Greg Ward - alto sax
Jason Stein - bass clarinet
Matt Lux - electric bass & percussion
Marcus Evans - drums & MPC (tracks 1-2, 4-6, 8, 10-11)
Chad Taylor - drums (tracks 3, 7, 9) (overdubbing guest)
